But I've seen names with meanings like "Beautiful" or "Gift from God" or "Country Meadow" or "Hope," etc.

Yeah, I know about the baby meaning things. However, most people don't know that (what your name means that is). In Chinese, on the other hand, people knows exactly what your name means (which could be quite embarrassing sometimes if your parents decided to give you high inappropriate names).

Then again, I'm reminded of Pantyhose from Ranma 1/2. =.=...

The only Slytherin I recall with a middle name is Tom. His middle name is not that grand though so...bleh...=.=...

Narcissa is quite a nice name as well.

Nymphadora...oh gosh, what was her mother thinking when she named her? I guess Ted didn't really have a say in the names as well. =.=...I wonder if you could legally get your name changed in the Wizarding World...=/...

Hey! I like Nymphadora! It's quirky and unique (not that every freaking character in canon doesn't have a 'unique' name) and you can shorten it tons of different ways. Nymph, Dora, Nym.....other ones I can't think of. But it's a wicked name and I don't know why you all pick on it. :'(

And, let's face it, I'd rather be called Nymphadora over Narcissa. >.> That's just the feminine form of Narcissus....that guy who fell in love with his own reflection and wasted away and eventually turned into the flower named after him. See? What kinda crap name is that? Nymphadora is pretty; it's just really uncommon.

Yeah, I knew the legend behind Narcissus...but it's just freaky when it's a guy. When it's a girl, it's not as freaky. XD

I guess I got freaked out by Tonks' name because it didn't really suit her. If it was...I don't know...some nymph-like character then it wouldn't have been as weird.

I like the name Nymphadora, too. Although she herself hates it and prefers to be called Tonks.

What really ticks me off, though, is the name 'Cho Chang'. It's not very creative.

Ugh, Cho Chang is a sucky name. I would hate to be called that.

...On second thought, I hate the character as well.

I read somewhere that the guy Luna marries... His name. I can't remember it, but I remember HATING it with a passion. Oh, yeah, and I love Luna's name.

What was Sirius' brother's name again. I forget.

Cho Chang...I've never liked that name either. She could've been more creative. There are plenty of Chinese/Korean names but she went with the least creative. =.=...

Luna married Rolf Scamander, grandson of Newt Scamander (I went to the Lexicon especially for you Screamer =P...).

Sirius's brother was Regulus. Didn't quite like it either.

Regulus is okay. Sounds a bit like regular.

I hate the names they give the house elves. I mean, Kreatcher? Dobby? WINKY?!?! Ye Gods!

Dobby was ok in my opinion, especially compared with Winky and Kreacher. The worst out of the three, IMO was Winky. =.=...Did she wink too much or something?

She should've been called Drunkie or something...with her obsession over Butterbeer. =.=...

Re: Names!

Post by Equilibrium on Thu Nov 06, 2008 6:25 am

You know Draco was the name of a Greek man who made a code of laws for Athens around 623 BCE... (I can't remember the precise date). It was the first step in their democracy. *geek* Yeahh. I learned that a month ago in World History. Yay, AP.

As for the rest; I love Lily. I don't know why, but I love it. Astoria is awesome, too. Sinistra has an air of mystery and intrigue, which I love. Dumbledore and Dobby are goofy, which is awesome! And I really can't think at the moment, so I'll leave it at that.

Lol Serp I haven't read any LOtR books yet >.< They're on my 'to read' list.

I agree with Toasty, I love the name Lily.

Sibyl Trelawney's grandmother (?) was named Cassandra - same as a girl from Greek myth. The one Apollo gifted with 'the sight'.

Rita Skeeter. For some reason that name annoyed me.

Does anyone know the story behind Xenophilius Lovegood's name???

Re: Names!

Post by MudBlood_Mistress on Thu Nov 06, 2008 11:22 am

I don't know the story behind Luna Lovegood's father's name, but it's pretty wierd. How do you pronounce it?

I always pitied Neville for his name. I'd never heard of Neville until I read the books, and Longbottom... If I had the last name Longbottom, I'd shoot myself. I would get SO TEASED.

Draco is one hot name. I like Lucius, too. Winky... winked. I guess that's the whole story.

When I move out of home, I'm going to legally change my last name to Snape. When/If I get married, I'll insist on keeping my maiden name (which will be Snape) and I'll most likely call my first son Severus.

Although, I might absolutely hate HP in a few years. You can never tell.

I'm so glad we've got this far without getting the topic locked. I'm so proud.

Lily is an adorable name, but Petunia? I hate the name. And Vernon. And Dudley. (Shudders)

And who would call their kid "Newt"? WHO?!?! WHY?!?! (I'm talking about Newt Scamander here.)

Bathilda Bagshot would be an awful name. And Rita Skeeter? The name suits her.

Oh we've been bashing Harry and Ginny's heads over naming their kid Albus Severus since the beginning. It's just a horrible deed on their part.

As for Dumbledore, I think I like Lild's version of his name better. Captain Beesting XD.

(Basically, we're almost always on topic in this thread. That's why it hadn't been locked, Blood XD)

I like Snape but I loathe Pomona, it doesn't even sound like a name to me!, and xenophilius sounds like xenophobic (which I think is being afriad of people from toehr cultures) but it always makes me think of pedophilic (sp?) so I never really liked it. I like Luna though (and it's suits her, kind of surreal and ... floaty). (Also if MM, the new MM not the old MM who's new name is Blood *sigh*, HI!!! MISS YOU!!! HOPE YOU HAD FUN TODAY AT CHURCH WITHOUT ME!!)

Who is Pomona anyway? Isn't is Sprout's first name?

If it is, WTF?! Who would want a name like that?!
