Names! Empty Names!

Post by MudBlood_Mistress Sat Nov 01, 2008 4:27 am

Okay. I decided since Marius keeps locking all our other topics, I might as well make one.

Who is in love with some of the awesome names J.K comes up with?

Who loathes them?

Post you're answers.

Me? I love Severus. The name is unique and sexy. Sirius is alright... But so many people go "Hah ha! Serious!" whenever they hear the name. I don't think I'd ever heard of the name Hermione until I read the books. Scorpius is okay, and Draco is so damn sexy. Never heard of the name Filius Flitwick before, though. Or Trelawney.

I hate the name Albus. I loathe the name Hugo.

Yes, Hugo! WTH was she thinking with Hugo?! I mean I can see where the other names came from but Hugo? So out of left field.

For some reason I like Lilly. Not sure why...I think cause it's just pretty. Yes lame reason, but it's the best I could come up with.

By the way MM nice job, we needed another topic in here ><

XD Sorry Marius.

Why yes, I am evil, thank you.

Okay, seriously (Haha, Sirius!), I can see Hermione, being as not into the latest styles and such, all for wanting to name her kid Hugo. But Ron? RON?! Where the hell was he when they named him?! Was he in a coma or something? I'd have thought Ron would have more common sense about that.

Names! Empty Re: Names!

Post by Lildaani Sat Nov 01, 2008 9:48 am

Have you noticed all the themes and alliterations J.K. used? I'm sure you have.

Petunia. Lily. Flowers.
The Black family names are mostly constellations. (Bellatrix is the third brightest star in the constellation Orion. — Sirius, the dog star. — Andromeda, constellation named for a princess in greek mythology. — Cygnus, another constellation named for a character in greek mythology. — Alphard, brightest star in the constellation Hydra.

Surprisingly, Draco's mother Narcissa managed to dodge the bullet, but she hot-potatoed it right to him, naming him for the dragon constellation. And he inflicted it upon his son Scorpius, as well.)

The Weasley family— They all have Arthurian names (nicknamed to sound more normal, but still.) Arthur, William (aka Bill,) Charles (Charlie,) Percival (Percy,) Fred and George, Ronald (Ron,) Ginerva (Ginny.) ['Ginevra' is the Italian form of Guinevere ("fair one"), the name of King Arthur's wife]

Minerva McGonagall.
Poppy Pomfrey.
Fillius Flitwik.
Severus Snape.
Pavarti and Padma Patil.
Luna Lovegood.
Cho Chang.
Dudley Dursley.
Helga Hufflepuff.
Godric Gryffindor.
Salazar Slytherin.
Rowena Ravenclaw.
Pansy Parkinson.
Gregory Goyle.
Colin Creevey.
Peter Pettigrew.

Need I go on?

They were all over the place. Once in awhile would have been fine, but good god.

I mean, her names are interesting and unique for the most part. And she does have a lot of characters, so I suppose she couldn't spend a lot of time picking and choosing about names and surnames and crap. But at the same time, she did. She either chose the name and fit the person to the name, or made the person and then assigned a name that matched, like "Lupin." Lupine? Wolf-like? Werewolf?
"Sirius." Dog-star. Dog Animagus. Somewhat dog-like personality.
"Bellatrix." Part of the Orion constellation, but also mean female warrior in latin, and is known as the Amazon star.

It's just weird.

Fah, I don't like a lot of the names she came up with. What kind of name is Pansy? Oh hey, that's another alliterating one, Lild. As is Gregory Goyle. I hate Percival, hate Hugo, hate Hyperion (I know it's a middle name, but still, *sick face*) and I absolutely despise Albus Severus. I mean, Albus on its own is bearable and Severus is actually a rather nice name in my opinion. But together?! That's like saying, Oh look, chocolate tastes good, so does curry, let's put them together! Horrid name. I feel unbelievably sorry for the kids. On the other hand, I love the name Hermione and Bellatrix... and... OMG! Nymphadora! What kind of name IS THAT!? Nymphadora?! I SO don't blame Tonks for going with Tonks. Anything is better than Nymphadora! ... Well, except Albus Severus.

Ugh - has JK never heard of a naking book or something?? The pattern in her names annoyed me but I could put up with it.

But the Epilogue ruined it.

I mean, come ON! Lily Luna? James Sirius? Albus Severus? HUGO!!??

Rose was the only decent one - and I don't mind him calling his daughter Lily, but James should have been a second name, and they shouldn't have all been named after his friends and people who died. No one else did. I don't think Ginny had a say in anything -.-"

Fred was sweet though. Go George!!

I totally get what you all mean. I also play a game when I'm bored. Here it is:

I try to name as many characters as possible who's middle name is the same as one of their parents first name. So far, I've got seven.

Severus TOBIAS Snape
Harry JAMES Potter
Bill ARTHUR Weasley
Ginny MOLLY Weasley
Albus PERCIVAL (and more.) Dumbledore
Hermione JANE Granger
Ron BILLIUS Weasley (okay, I know Billius is his Great Uncle's name)

There was one more, but I forgot.

Also, Lild, for the alliteration thing, Dudley Dursely is another.

yeah I just named the first bunch that came to mind, there are tons of them.

Not to burst your bubble, MM, but we don't actually know Snape's middle name, cannonly. Tobias is just fannon.

Also, we don't know Hermione's parent's names. (and in fact, J.K.R. actually changed Hermione's middle name to JEAN for DH, even though she'd said previously that it was Jane.)

Yes, we're evil Marius. Haven't you noticed that a while back already?

Anyway, back on topic.

My favorite has to be Bellatrix. I really do adore that name. XD

Draco and Lucius are also nice names IMO.

Hermione's nice as well but of course, Bellatrix still tops my chart.

As for the Arthurian names, yup, I've noticed that. That's why the Weasley I have in "Somewhere in Time" was named Gareth to go along with the theme. XD

But in regards to the name being like the personality...it's like, yeah, the parents certainly know how their children are going to act like when they grow up. :snickers:

Ones I hate: I've never minded Albus when it was Dumbledore's name that much. When it got to the crapilogue (thanks, Mike, for the term), I hated it. What kind of a name is Albus Severus? Severus itself is great. I mean, Severus Snape...Yayness. XD But Albus Severus? >.<...

I don't really like the name Hugo that much but I guess it didn't bother me that much when I've read it because one of my friends' name was precisely that.

I've never liked the name "Harry" that much since my sister and I used to call this person with hairy legs "Harry". =.=....

Mudblood_Mistress -> MM.

Yeah, it's easy to get confused with fanfic names and canon names. I mean, it doesn't say anywhere that Draco's middle name is Lucius, no? But it appears everywhere. It could've been Abraxas for all we know. =P

Honestly, it would've been so cool is Sirius's middle name was Lee. XD

I don't know what the Loft is but I do love Blaise Zabini (though I wasn't aware that Blaise was a name at all, no less a girl's name, so when everyone was all 'what he's a guy?!' I just thought 'why wouldn't he be?') I also think that some icons have realy words of wisdom on the whole baby naming thing:

"Rose: because that's as close as Hermione could get to Lily"
"Harry Potter: obviously doesn't own a baby-naming book"
"Albus Severus: bordering on child cruelty?"

those made me giggle and think 'oh riiight'.

Also (this one's a bit late) I like Lily too, it sounds pretty but has strngth to it too... and it'd be cool fer her dad to get her one lily for every year she was alive on her birthday, the last bunch on her wedding day... sorry I am a girl I think these things

"Albus Severus: bordering on child cruelty?"

XDDDD OMIGOSH XDDDD I loved that.

Blaise doesn't seem like a girl's name to me, but I do love him.

Yeah. Ron is a bitch. But I still like him.

Wasn't Sirius' middle name Orion or something like that? (I might have read this in FF.Net somewhere. I don't know.) Lee would have been awesome.

Yes, I got the whole "Mudblood_Mistress = MM" thing, but why that in particular? I mean, why does no one call me Mistress or Mist or Blood? (YAY BLOOD)

Lee Jordan is awesome. AND THEY DIDN'T PUT HIM IN!!! THEY HAD SOME CHICK DO THE QUIDDITCH ANNOUNCEMENTS!

Yeah. With the crapilogue, we know who's the dominating person in the relationship.

Now you're called Blood.

And I think that was actually a guy who was doing the announcements.

Sirius's middle name might have been Orion. I remember reading that somewhere as well.

But I had to agree with "Albus Severus: bordering on child cruelty?"

I can't believe I've forgotten Blaise. That's a really cool name as well.

I thought Rose was a nice name though. @@ Out of all the flower names JKR used, I think my faves were actually Lily and Rose.

Of course, we're comparing it to Pansy, Lavendar, Petunia, etc. so...yeah. =.=...

Well, it was a guy who looked like a girl.

I love Seamus, but I don't know how to pronounce his name. It sucks.

I like the name Ariana, but who would want the last name Dumbledore? Seriously. (Ahaha, Sirius!)

Yay, I've got a new nickname. Blood. Heh heh heh.

Marvolo... Tom's middle name. Isn't it just unique? And Riddle as the last name is quite correct. He is a particually hard riddle to solve.

Fred and George's name's are too plain, I think. (Although, I have heard that there was a couple who named their twins "Fish" and the other "Chips". I also heard a couple were forced to re-name their child because they called her "Tahula Does The Hula In Hawaii". People who have normal names should be happy they don't have embarrassing ones.)

Meh. I agree with Lild. JKR has something against Slytherins. She went through 7 books talking about school unity and suddenly most of the Slytherins did not get redeemed. In addition to the non-existence of middle names. Bleh.

I personally love the name Tom Riddle. Then again, it might because I love the character. XD But I don't really like Marvolo. It's just...Bleh....IMO.

I've heard of people being called "Beautiful Girl" and "Handsome Man" in Chinese. =.=...Gosh, if my parents named me that, I would shoot myself first.

Well I'm not sure how it works in other languages, but if you pick up a "Baby Name Book" you might find out that you are named something like that (looking at the meaning of whatever name you have, that is.)

My name, for example, apparently means "pure." *rolls eyes*

But I've seen names with meanings like "Beautiful" or "Gift from God" or "Country Meadow" or "Hope," etc.
